Pair Eyewear
Custom Icon Library for Pair's digital experience
Design
Rais Ahmed
Overview
We had the pleasure of working on a robust, custom set of pixel-perfect icons for Pair’s digital real estate. This project aimed to enhance the brand’s digital presence, while enhancing usability, reducing cognitive load, and improving accessibility.
Objectives
The core objective of this project was to create a set of icons that would encompass Pair’s brand identity, and to create further consistency experience across the web experience, email campaigns, and social. While we wanted these icons to be aesthetically pleasing, we strived to ensure that
Process + Responsibilities
Kick-Off
The creation of a pixel-perfect icon library including small, medium, and large versions of each icon. In doing so, we created usage guidelines around each size:
Small (16x16)
Medium (24x24)
Large (40x40)
We used 2px stroke-weight to create an icon set that matched the weight of our text styles, creating further visual harmony across Pair’s UI and marketing collateral.
Outcome
The icon library officially was introduced as part of Pair’s greater design system, enhancing brand consistency + an improved user experience. The icons provided a unified language across the website, email campaigns, and social, contributing to a more cohesive and engaging customer journey.
Project Outcome
The custom icon set successfully enhanced Pair Eyewear's brand consistency and user experience. The icons provided a unified visual language across the website, email campaigns, and marketing materials, contributing to a more cohesive and engaging customer journey. Feedback from both stakeholders and users was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the icons' clarity, appeal, and functional effectiveness.
Learnings + Reflections
Working on this project underscored the importance of thorough research, stakeholder collaboration, and iterative design processes. It was a rewarding experience to see how thoughtful iconography can significantly enhance a brand's visual identity and improve user engagement. This project reinforced the belief in the power of design to create meaningful + impactful user experiences.
Research
For this initiative, we conducted two separate rounds of research:
1
Preliminary Research
Before we defined scope and design requirements, we did a round of preliminary research including a round of comp analysis against competitors in the space, as well as leading e-commerce brands to identify common patterns and best practices.
We also conducted a survey asking our existing users to identify existing pain points they experienced while browsing on Pair's product page. We tested among two separate cohorts: the loyal user that has been with Pair for 2+ years, and newly adopted customers who recently had made a purchase.
2
Usability Testing
Since this page refresh was introducing multiple net-new components for our users, we wanted to conduct a round of usability tests to validate the designs we put together. We ran 2 separate unmoderated tests via UserTesting. Each test included 5 participants, with one group being existing Pair users, and the other group being users who have never interacted with Pair's website.
3
A/B Test
Once the designs were ready and built by engineering, we launched an A/B test to 50% of traffic on site. Because this was a page that experienced high traffic, this acted as a final round to validate the updated designs. (spoiler: the variant vastly outperformed the control)
